Nov 29, 2005 : ICANN Considers Shorter .Com Domains

📅 - The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (icann.org) said on Tuesday it is considering releasing single-letter Web addresses, such as "a.com" or "b.com," as early as this weekend.

The organization has received a number of requests by companies seeking to extend their brands with single-letter Web addresses. The ICANN board will meet in Vancouver, British Columbia, where it will discuss the new initiative.

The new single-letter Web address names could start to appear as early as next year. However, the transition could be complex with the new online real estate holding the potential to draw prices up to six figures.

Domain names are usually released on a first-come, first-served basis for $10 or less. This policy favors those who have written programs to automatically and frequently check for a name's availability. One possible solution may be to auction names to the highest bidder.
