Jul 25, 2006 : EURid Sues 400 Registrars
📅 - The European Registry of Internet Domain Names (eurid.eu) announced on Monday that it has suspended 74,000 .eu domain names and is suing 400 registrars for breach of contract, reports statistics service provider Ipwalk (ipwalk.com). The organization alleges that the aforementioned registrars have engaged in warehousing, systematically purchasing attractive domain names to later sell them for higher prices.
"In this case we are convinced that the domain name holders of the 74,000 .eu names (Ovidio Ltd, Fausto Ltd and Gabino Ltd) are acting as a front for a number of registrars," says Herman Sobrie, legal manager of EURid. "The domain name holders and the registrars can be regarded as one and the same. Since registrars should only register domain names for existing customers and not 'warehouse' the names in order to resell them at a higher price, this is clearly in breach of the registrar contract."
Ipwalk reported in April that Cyprus held more .eu domain names at the time than France. A small island with a population of less than 800,000 having more .eu domain names than a country with more than 60 million people quickly raised suspicion. Ipwalk says a second look at the statistics for .eu domain names show the numbers for Cyprus back down to a more reasonable 12,254, compared to 84,998 back in early July.
GoDaddy's founder and CEO, Bob Parsons, raised his concerns about registration abuse during the launch of .eu.
While the court will decide what happens to the 74,000 domain names, EURid says that they would like to make them available for registration again.
