Facebook Freezes WhatsApp Data Use Following U.K. Privacy Concerns


📅 - Facebook uses the mass amounts of data it collects about users and their buying habits for advertising purposes, but the U.K. recently took a stand for its citizens' privacy, demanding that Facebook stop using data from WhatsApp users in the country.

“We have now asked Facebook and WhatsApp to sign an undertaking committing to better explaining to customers how their data will be used,” said U.K. Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham. “We've set out the law clearly to Facebook, and we're pleased that they've agreed to pause using data from U.K. WhatsApp users for advertisements or product improvement purposes.”

Facebook's attempts to monetize the WhatsApp platform prompted the privacy concerns. Facebook purchased the company in 2014 for $22 billion.
