Sep, 2016 : Moscow to Replace Microsoft After Pressure from Putin


📅 - Following Russian President Vladimir Putin's call for Russia to replace foreign tech with domestic replacements, Moscow city is planning to switch all Microsoft programs with Russian software alternatives. This happens amid increasing tensions between Russia and the U.S.

The first step will be replacing Microsoft's Exchange Server and Outlook on 6,000 of the cities computers. In they're place, a state-run e-mail system, carried by Rostelecom PJSC, will be installed.

Russian President Putin has been pushing for state entities and Russian companies to “Go Russian” after concerns over security.

Moscow is also mulling over plans to expand even further. If all goes well following the initial exchange, more than 600,000 computers and servers may end up being switched over.
