The problem they are trying to fix is the fact that going carbon-neutral doesn't require using actual renewable energy. They are fixing this problem by using actual renewable energy. In fact, 44% of the electricity used right now by Microsoft data centers comes from solar, wind and hydro energy sources.
The company wants to expand this to 50% by the end of 2018 and to 60% next sometime in the next decade. .
