May, 2015 : Cloud Foundry Foundation Sees Rapid Growth

May 18, 2015 - Cloud Foundry Foundation, home of the leading open source cloud native application platform, kicked off the Cloud Foundry Summit today in Santa Clara with significant development progress and strong community growth since the foundation launch in December.

Development progress within the independent Cloud Foundry Foundation has continued to accelerate through dramatic increases in contributions to the project. With the addition of Apigee, Bloomberg, Cloudsoft, Huawei, Mirantis, and New Relic, corporate membership has now grown to more than 40 vendor and end user organizations, representing the United States, EMEA and APAC. The Cloud Foundry user community continues to expand as well, with 120 self-organized local groups, attracting more than 16,500 members from 91 cities in 40 countries around the globe.

On the heels of this growth, 1400 application developers, IT operations experts, technical managers, business leaders, service providers and project contributors are attending the Cloud Foundry Summit today and tomorrow at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Attendees can see how organizations like Comcast, Corelogic, DigitalGlobe, Garmin, GSA, Intel, Kroger and Orange Labs are using Cloud Foundry in their environments. They are also getting a first look at Cloud Foundry advancements announced this week by members including:

HP Helion Development Platform (HDP) Support for Windows Applications: HP Helion is contributing the server and development stack code to the Cloud Foundry Foundation and driving towards a single solution for Windows application support inside of Cloud Foundry going forward.
New IBM Bluemix Services and the first IBM Cloud Foundry Dojo: New set of data-driven services will include a .NET buildpack that will be contributed back to the community. IBM is also announcing the IBM Dojo in Raleigh, NC, which will be open to all developers where IBM will help accelerate skills on Cloud Foundry code base and mentor developers to dramatically increase the number of code committers to Cloud Foundry.
GE launches Cloud Foundry “Industrial” Dojo: And announced it will work with the Cloud Foundry community to develop and contribute open source code to the Cloud Foundry Foundation that will route all industrial messaging protocols.
Pivotal and Mirantis Forge Partnership to Deliver Cloud Foundry on OpenStack: Pivotal plans to support Pivotal Cloud Foundry® on Mirantis OpenStack. In addition, Mirantis will now also resell Pivotal Cloud Foundry to customers.

In the last year, the Cloud Foundry project has seen a 36% increase in week-over-week code commits. More than 2,300 pull requests from non-dedicated committers have been accepted, and the total contributor-base has expanded to over 2,100 developers. This activity spans 185 discrete modular projects that are either incubating or active projects within the foundation. The Cloud Foundry Runtime project has maintained a rapid release cadence, producing 12 releases since the start of 2015.

Recent technical features and community contributions to the project include:

Lattice, a repackaging of several Cloud Foundry platform components designed to be a rapid developer trial experience of a robust container clustering solution.
The next generation of the Cloud Foundry runtime layer, code-named Diego, is nearing release. Diego is currently in a Beta status.
A Microsoft-built BOSH CPI to allow users to easily deploy Cloud Foundry onto Microsoft Azure, and has announced its intention to provide that to the Cloud Foundry community. This integration is being demonstrated at Cloud Foundry Summit.
