Dec, 2014 : Alibaba Sites Exposed to Cyber Vulnerabilities
📅 - Another day, another cybersecurity issue. Just last week, potential security flaws on two separate websites operated by China's largest e-commerce company Alibaba were uncovered. One security analyst found a vulnerability that could expose the shipping information of millions of users, while another found a loophole that could allow hackers to adjust pricing on merchandise being purchased through the site.
While an Alibaba spokesperson assures users that the vulnerabilities have been addressed, technology expert Karl Volkman, Chief Technology Officer at SRV Network Inc., wonders if the world's largest online shopping company is doing enough to protect user data, especially at a time of year when online shoppers are most active.
“Unfortunately, the security loopholes uncovered last week suggest the company isn't doing its due diligence,” warns Volkman. “The security analysts stumbled upon them, which is cause for concern. While companies across the United States are reworking 2015 budgets to allow for more comprehensive cybersecurity measures, I'm not confident organizations abroad are demonstrating the same level of care.”
Volkman suggests, especially as holiday shopping is at its peak, online shoppers take extra care to research the companies to whom they submit personal data and credit information. “What we've learned this last year is that you can never be too careful. Don't save your credit card to any sites and, if you're unsure, always checkout as a ‘guest' rather than create a member profile.”
