Facebook’s Internet.org App Offers Free Internet Access To Users In Zambia
📅 - Facebook launched a new app today that brings free Internet access to mobile users in Zambia.
The Internet.org app, launched as an Android app, allows customers free, limited access to health, employment, and local information without data charges, according to a press release from the social media giant.
Facebook notes that 85 percent of the world's population lives in areas with cellular coverage, though only 30 percent can access the Internet due to cost.
“Affordability and awareness are significant barriers to internet adoption for many,” says Facebook's Product Management Director, Guy Rosen. “By providing free basic services via the app, we hope to bring more people online and help them discover valuable services they might not have otherwise.”
Airtel users in the African country will have access to a number of sites such as AccuWeather, Google Search, Go Zambia Jobs, Wikipedia, eZeLibrary, uReport, and of course, Facebook.
Facebook adds that it plans on expanding the app to other countries in the future.
