Jul, 2014 : Amazon To Fight FTC On Policy Changes For In-App Charges
📅 - Amazon is not accepting the FTC's push for policy changes, and is instead fighting back by not entering into a settlement with the Commission.
According to USA Today, the FTC is trying to get the retail giant to change its policy by requiring passwords to purchase in-app content, though Amazon says the parental controls on its devices are “effective” and include real time notice on all purchases.
“The commission's unwillingness to depart from the precedent it set with Apple despite our very different facts leaves us no choice but to defend our approach in court,” wrote Amazon associate general counsel Andrew DeVore in a letter earlier this month.
The Commission's complaint states that there have been millions of dollars of unauthorized in-app purchases by children on Amazon's devices, leading to the push to make the company refund customers and give up all revenue from the unauthorized charges, Reuters reports.
Additionally, the FTC says they are “focused on ensuring that companies comply with the fundamental principle tht consumers should not be made to pay for something they did not authorize.”
“Consumers using mobile devices have the same long-established and fundamental consumer protections as they would anywhere else.”
A similar case occurred with Apple last year. The tech giant complied with the FTC's orders to refund all customers and change its billing policies to ensure that this issue does not occur again.
