U.S. To Charge Chinese Officials In Cyber Attack Against U.S. Businesses
📅 - The United States Justice Department is expected to announce charges on Monday against five Chinese government officials for allegedly hacking into U.S. businesses, making this the first time the U.S. has publicly accused another country of cyber crimes against the United States, ABC News reports.
According to sources familiar with the case, the five officials, members of China's People's Liberation Army known as Unit 61398, are charged with theft of trade secrets and economic espionage.
The companies targeted by China's cyber-attack include nuclear power plants and information from a company that makes solar panels.
“For too long, the Chinese Government has blatantly sought to use cyber-espionage to obtain economic advantage for its state-owned industries,” said FBI Director James Comey to NBC News.
Last year China was linked to the hack of multiple newspapers computer systems, including the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, though China's foreign ministry denied the allegations.
A press conference by Attorney General Eric Holder will be held today at 10 a.m. ET to discuss the charges against the five officials.
