📅 - Overwatch deploys VMLogix LabManager for virtual lab automation and better management of VMs and hardware resources.

VMLogix, Inc., a provider of virtual machine management solutions, today announced that Overwatch Systems, Ltd. (Overwatch), an operating unit of Textron Systems and a provider of integrated intelligence software solutions for today's U.S. and international defense and intelligence communities, has deployed VMLogix LabManager to centralize its virtual lab and virtual machine (VM) management capabilities to reduce VM sprawl and transform the data center into a virtual pool of computing resources - creating an on-premise, private cloud. The company claims that Overwatch chose LabManager for its ability to automate the entire deployment operation (including the package install, license management and general tasks) with no need for third-party task automation tools; user interface (UI) which is easy to use even for those unfamiliar with virtualization; and, hypervisor-agnostic approach which eliminated virtualization platform vendor lock-in.

It explains that after investigating other solutions on the market, the Overwatch engineering team deployed VMLogix LabManager in early 2008. Overwatch currently runs LabManager in their primary testing and development data center network on VMware ESX 3.5 and Dell servers. Since deploying VMLogix LabManager, Overwatch has experienced a number of benefits, including the reduction of OPEX and CAPEX costs, the ability to manage and monitor resource usage and the automation and self-service of virtual machine creation and deployment in a private cloud environment. Additionally, in 2009, Overwatch experienced significant company growth and needed more room for new employees. LabManager enabled the engineering department to replace more than 250 physical lab machines with 225 concurrent VMs - providing significant savings on the cost of new hardware.

The company further explains that VMLogix LabManager allows customers to consolidate and automate lab IT infrastructure in order to deliver and maintain software applications more quickly, cost-effectively and reliably. LabManager allows development, test and support teams to build, snapshot, share and deploy production-like environments on-demand across virtualization platforms. Companies can dramatically reduce the manual effort, time and IT resources required to develop and maintain higher quality software applications by using comprehensive automation capabilities, advanced team management and seamless integrations with leading solutions from HP and IBM.

"Overwatch is a great example of the benefits that software organizations can achieve by moving to a private cloud environment," said Sameer Dholakia, CEO of VMLogix. "Without a platform to centralize and automate VM management, resource utilization remains low in a typical virtualized environment and VM sprawl can be rampant. VMLogix LabManager transforms these resources into a private cloud, and allows organizations to optimally leverage their infrastructure."

"We needed a single centralized repository and a way to manage information regarding various hardware resources and engineering images, including information like who is using and creating what templates, which software packages are on those templates and what version of the operating system is in use. Essentially, we wanted to virtualize our physical resources so that they could be managed and allocated as a private cloud," said Bart Burkhard, Engineering Technology Manager at Overwatch. "With VMLogix LabManager we are able to better monitor usage and identify how particular resources are being used, allowing us to redirect them when engineers are not using them, ensuring full hardware utilization."

"VMLogix's ability to support multiple hypervisors was key for us," stated Geoff Dillon, Senior Software Engineer at Overwatch and the Main Administrator for VMLogix LabManager. "With other solutions that we looked at, users needed training because there were steps to the workflow that did not make sense or were not intuitive. VMLogix LabManager stands out for its general workflow and an easy to understand UI, even for someone unfamiliar with virtualization. This was a major plus for us."
