Dec 8, 2008 : Honda Builds LEED Data Center

📅 - Undeterred by the crumbling US automotive industry, Honda has invested $25 million in its "green," Longmont, Colorado data center, making it the company's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (or LEED) Silver certified data center in the country.

According to an InformationWeek report, the Japanese vehicle manufacturer's new facility includes "floors made of recycled concrete, office furniture crafted of reused steel and newsprint, low-flow automatic faucets, motion-sensor lights, energy-efficient servers, outside air for cooling, and an Energy Star-certified roof."

With its US sales falling almost 32 percent in November, compared to record-setting November 2007 numbers, Honda expects its committment to "greening" its IT infrastructure in difficult times should yield operating costs, Honda America chief information officer Jennifer Sepull told InformationWeek.

Actually, the 61,000-square-foot Longmont data center, which opened in October, is just one of five new green buildings certified by the US Green Building Council's LEED standards this year as part of its efforts to further reduce the environmental impact of Honda's operations and products in the US. These buildings include three rated LEED Gold and one rated Platium.

"The USGBC sees Honda's green building activity as a sign of its leadership and commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its buildings," US Green Building Council market development vice president Doug Gatlin said in a statement. "In fact, Honda was the first to build a LEED Gold certified mixed-use industrial facility in the USA. In this Gresham, Oregon, facility they've looked at landscaping, water efficiency, use of native species and then all the efficiency optimization measures within the building."

Honda's new data center is joining only a handful of facilities with LEED-certified facilities including global agriculture company Monsanto (monsanto.com). In August, Advanced Data Centers (adatacenters.com) announced its McClellan Park data center was pre-certified for LEED's platinum standard.  Digital Realty Trust (digitalrealtytrust.com) was the first data center to earn LEED gold certification when it completed auditing in November 2007.
