📅 December 3, 2008 - Registry operator of the new ".tel" top level domain Telnic (telnic.org) has begun accepting applications for trademarked brands and company names worldwide, giving them first dibs on a "live" comprehensive listing in the first global, mobile-optimized online directory.

According to Telnic's Wednesday announcement, trademark owners will have a chance to register .tel domains in the "sunrise" period before February 2, after which .tel will be generally available, sold at premium prices for minimum three year terms. After March 24, they will be available to the general public for a regular price and a one year term.

"The launch of .tel represents the most significant innovation in the domain name system since the advent of .com," Telnic chief executive officer Khashayar Mahdavi said in a statement. "Essentially, the .tel offers businesses of all sizes a fast, efficient, adaptable and intelligent service that will let customers interact with them in any way they want. Anyone that wants to communicate better with their customers should purchase a .tel."

Trademark holders in more than 29 countries can register a .tel domain through a network of more than 120 ICANN-accredited registrars on a first-come, first-serve basis. In October, Telnic, reported that more than 100 ICANN-accredited registrars have signed up to sell .tel domain names well in advance of the December 3 launch date. UK-based registrar Com Laude (comlaude.com) has high expectations for .tel.

"Telnic has embarked on this Sunrise period to give brand owners around the world the opportunity to secure their .tel domain ahead of the general public," Com Laude managing director Nick Wood said in a statement. ".tel is very innovative and offers brand owners a new way of communicating with customers and we hope that companies take advantage of this opportunity to register their domain. Based on the level of interest we're already seeing, we believe .tel is going to be very popular with brand owners."

A .tel domain has the unique ability to host personal or corporate contact information directly in the domain name system, which can then be universally accessed, compared to the typical the DNS for other TLDs in which the DNS only provides a mapping between domain names and IP addresses.
