Oct 22, 2008 : PEER 1 Expands SAN-Based Backup

📅 October 22, 2008 - Online IT infrastructure provider PEER 1 Network Enterprises (peer1.com ) is expanding its storage area network-based backup capability to colocation and ServerBeach (serverbeach.com ) dedicated hosting customers.

According to PEER 1's announcement Tuesday, the new backup service uses IBM's (ibm.com) Tivoli technology to bring SAN-based backup to PEER 1's full hosting line. The service includes free setup and provides customers with a fully managed system overseen by PEER 1 backup specialists.

Using the Tivoli Storage Manager software, PEER 1's colocation customers now have a hosted backup option, which is rare in the colocation industry. Also, ServerBeach customers can use this enterprise-class backup service regardless of their business size to maintain a higher level of protection, and to avoid downtime and revenue loss.

"The expansion of our data backup service came about as a direct response to customer feedback," PEER 1 product management director Tim Varma said in a statement. "Our customers have a need for this type of solution to ensure that their data, no matter the type of hosting or network service, has additional lines of protection in place. We regularly ask our customers how we are doing and what they need via our PEER 1 Pulse Surveys, which help us to monitor trends and keep meeting current requirements for companies of all sizes and industries."

PEER 1 noted that in a recent Pulse Survey, SAN backup services and shared storage options for customers within the SAN environment ranked as an important service offering for all levels of hosting.

"IBM continues to invest in the Software as a Service model with companies such as PEER 1 that offer hosting services leveraging IBM software," IBM Tivoli product manager John Connor said in a statement. "IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager software is designed to provide centralized, automated data protection to help reduce the risks associated with data loss. By adopting the SaaS model using IBM's software, PEER 1 was able to rapidly expand its data protection services to a new set of customers."

Offering Tivoli backup is the latest value-added service in a long line of announcements by PEER 1. Last week, PEER 1 partnered with application performance management service provider Absolute Performance (absolute-performance.com) to offer a range of advanced monitoring solutions to PEER 1 customers. And at the beginning of the month, PEER 1 unveiled its partner network (peer1.com/partners), a referral and reseller program aimed at web developers, system integrators and IT consultants.
