Sep 29, 2008 : Level 3 Streams Presidential Debates

level3.com logo📅 - Fox Interactive Media (newscorp.com/management/fim.html) has selected fiber-based communications provider Level 3 Communications (level3.com) to deliver video acquisition, transport, encoding and live streaming for all four of the 2008 US presidential debates online.

According to Level 3's announcement last week, the company's Content Markets Group delivered live video of Friday's debate in Oxford, Mississippi at mydebates.org presented by MySpace (myspace.com), also a division of NewsCorp (newscorp.com). Level 3's video broadcast services will be used for the remaining three debates as well to redundant broadcast encoding centers and Fox Television affiliates. The company's broadcast encoding centers encode the video feed in real-time and then oversee distribution via its content delivery network for live streaming with Adobe Flash.

"MySpace is pleased to partner with Level 3 to deliver the back-end of MyDebates.org," MySpace IMPACT director Lee Brenner said in a statement. "Live video streaming and other interactive features further enhance the MySpace widgets functionality to potentially increase political awareness in this crucial campaign period."

This is the first deployment of Level 3's video encoding services. These services, according to the company, bridge the final gap between the company's video broadcast and CDN services, enabling Level 3 to simulcast live events for broadcast and online viewing.

"We are excited to offer Fox Interactive Media an end-to-end solution that takes advantage of our broad portfolio of video broadcast and content delivery services," Level 3's Content Markets Group president Grant van Rooyen said in a statement. "Our delivery of the 2008 Presidential Debates provides a mainstream showcase for our online video encoding technology -- a new and integral component of Level 3's CDN services platform."

Earlier this month, Level 3's video broadcast and content delivery network services were in the political spotlight when the company was the official live video and content delivery services provider for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Online viewers of the convention accessed over 350,000 hours of live and on-demand video, including video streaming in high-definition, which had never before been available at the DNC. The average visitor logged more than 80 minutes of viewing over the four-day event.
