📅 September 2, 2008 - Content delivery services provider Panther Express (pantherexpress.net) is now providing its content delivery services to studiVZ (studivz.net), reportedly one of Europe's largest social networking sites with more than 10 million members.

According to Panther Express' announcement Tuesday, studiVZ chose Panther Express' content delivery network, delivering its more than 12 billion page requests per month and more than 55,000 requests every second.

"We met with most of the top content delivery networks to see what they could provide," studiVZ chief executive officer Marcus Riecke said in a statement. "In addition to Panther Express's outstanding performance and ability to scale to meet our rapidly growing member base, we were very impressed with Panther's amazing customer support and helpful business attitude."

An abbreviation of the German word Studentenverzeichnis, meaning students' directory, studiVZ offers German-speakers a very similar service to Facebook (facebook.com). The Panther Express CDN will power studiVZ's three social networking services including schülerVZ (schülerVZ.net) for elementary and secondary school students, studiVZ (studivz.net) for university students and meinVZ (meinvz.net) for graduates and those not in school.

According to Panther Express, the CDN's shielding, origin protection and cache hit ratio features are very important to studiVZ because they reduce the load on the origin server, lowering need for a large capital investment in origin servers.

"When users make a request to a cache that does not have the object, the cache makes an HTTP request back to the origin web server," the company stated in a press release. "By using the Panther CDN Shielding Service, this request is directed to the Shield POP first, rather than going directly to the origin web server." The company states that this provides a better and more responsive end-user experience.

Panther Express international division vice president Gad Stanislas said studiVZ's migration to Panther Express servers went smoothly and 100 percent of the site's static content is now served over Panther Express' CDN.
