Announced Wednesday, windows hosting provider CrystalTech, a division of NASDAQ-traded Newtek Business Services (newtekbusinessservices.com), will offer Hyper-V VPS plans, available for pre-order starting at $99.95 to provide developers and businesses with operating system level control.
CrystalTech describes the new offering to be more like a dedicated server than traditional VPS. It includes root access and the ability to install many common software packages and toolsets, without the overall cost and management responsibility associated with a dedicated server.
Hyper-V, unveilled in late June, is a hypervisor-based technology that provides a scalable, reliable, and tightly integrated virtualization platform. It is a key feature of Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and a viable rival to VMware's (vmware.com) industry-leading virtualization solutions.

"As one of the first web hosts to offer Microsoft Windows Server 2008 earlier this year, CrystalTech has had the opportunity to test Hyper-V in a dedicated environment for several months now," Cichon said in a statement.
He also believes that the new VPS offering will be a middle path for many consumers who need solutions more powerful than traditional shared hosting but do not need the hassle and expense of a dedicated server.
"As a middle ground between shared and dedicated services, the appeal and demand for virtual private servers is growing among businesses and developers who require more control over their web environments, but don't necessarily need the entire resources of a dedicated server," said Cichon.
