Jun 17, 2008 : Firefox Downloads Crash Mozilla Site

📅 - Plans for Mozilla's (mozilla.org) much-touted "Download Day" -- the first day to download the new Firefox 3 browser -- were thwarted on Tuesday when its website failed to work properly, according to reports by Network World (networkworld.com).

Mozilla was scheduled to release its Firefox 3 browser Tuesday at 1 p.m. EST after weeks of promoting the "event." The open source developer had requested users to download Firefox 3 on the first day its release to set the world's record for the largest number of software downloads in 24 hour, making it the first record of its kind.

However, Mozilla's website found itself offline or only periodically working throughout Tuesday morning on the East Coast, preventing users from being able to download Firefox 3 more than an hour later.

Mozilla provided a brief explanation of the website issues on its blog Tuesday:

"The outpouring of interest and enthusiasm around Firefox 3 has been overwhelming (literally!)," according to the post. "Our servers are currently feeling the burn and should be back to normal shortly."

The post also added that Mozilla will begin registering downloads to submit towards a potential record for a complete 24 hour cycle, as soon as the site goes live.
