) announced on Monday it has moved its entire server fleet to new energy efficient Dell servers, in an effort to better protect the environment.


The company says that new Dell servers consume up to 25 percent less energy than previous generations, and when coupled with performance gains, this results in up to a 300 percent increase in performance per watt over previous generations.

In addition to the new server fleet and lighting, Sharkspace says it will also cut its energy use by converting its paper files to electronic versions through document imaging technology. The conversion is expected to cut the web host's paper use by half.

"As a company that strives to best serve the residents of our community, we feel an obligation to do everything we can to protect our environment," says Scott Jones, founder and CEO of SharkSpace. "We view this not only a matter of corporate responsibility, but also a case of moral and ethical accountability. By joining The Green revolution, we're expanding our scope beyond just optimizing our own operations to helping the industry set higher efficiency standards and develop better environmental practices."

Sharkspace is one of many web hosts and data centers adopting greater 'green' practices to reduce the amount of energy consumption. Rackspace announced yesterday it has built a carbon neutral data center in Slough, Berkshire, UK, while Hosting.com announced earlier this month it has purchased green energy blocks that will offset carbon emissions.

Sharkspace provides a range of web hosting services including shared hosting, reseller hosting and customized dedicated server, domain registration, SSL certificates and add-ons for dedicated IP addresses. 

The company's data centers use the SoftLayer Network in Dallas, Texas, Seattle, Washington, and the GNAX network in Atlanta, Georgia.
