📅 April 2, 2008 - Dedicated hosting provider The Planet (theplanet.com -> softlayer.com -> ibm.com) announced on Wednesday that it has launched a series of customer testimonial videos on its website.

Videos on the Web have been growing in popularity since the launch of online video channels like YouTube and iTunes and more and more companies have been integrating video elements to their websites, like customer testimonials or viral marketing campaigns, if not simply to jump on the bandwagon, than in hopes of engaging, educating and convincing potential customers to buy their products or services.

There have been a few examples of this in the Web hosting industry so far with Fastservers.Net and Rackspace releasing their own video testimonials.

The Planet's videos feature testimonials from the executives of small and medium-size companies that host their IT infrastructures and businesses with The Planet. In each case, the executives describe how they use The Planet's network, data centers and products to grow their businesses.

"There's no one more qualified to talk about The Planet's products and services than our own customers," says Steve Kahan, VP of marketing and product management at The Planet. "More often than not, they've hosted with other providers and are looking for a company with a solid reputation that understands the critical business issues they face. Customers that are featured on the website include Web hosting providers Site5 (site5.com ) and Hands-On Web Hosting (handsonwebhosting.com -> coloat.com -> performive.com), message boards forum provider ProBoards (proboards.com) and media and marketing company AdWorld Media (adworldmedia.com).

The Planet says it plans on adding more videos during the course of 2008.

📅 Mar 24, 2009 - The Planet Launches Storage Cloud - Managed hosting and dedicated hosting provider The Planet (theplanet.com -> softlayer.com -> ibm.com) announced on Tuesday that it has expanded its product line with the general release of its new Storage Cloud service, developed through a partnership with storage delivery network operator Nirvanix (nirvanix.com).

In a conversation with the WHIR, Rob Walters, general manager for The Planet's storage and data protection business said the company looked to customers for input on how the company could expand its storage portfolio. Their primary needs, he says, were for redundancy and reduced download time.

Also key to The Planet's Storage Cloud is the notion of geographic choice. Customers
