Mar 26, 2008 : SIDN says .nl Domains Hijacked
📅 - The official registry for the .nl domain name, SIDN (sidn.nl) announced on Tuesday that it has taken a closer look at the results of its landrush for numerical domain names in February following some alleged irregularities in the process.
According to reports on The Register (theregister.co.uk), two Dutch companies, MyAlbum.nl and BliXEM Internet Services, have been put in question of domain hijacking and must return thousands of numeric domain names they acquired during the landrush, an act they attribute to "just being smart."
MyAlbum.nl were successful in obtaining almost 2,600 numerical domain names by writing software for 35 different servers that automated the requests for the names. The Register says MyAlbum.nl apparently got one sixth of the numbers available after two months of preparation and an investment of 35,000 EUR. BliXEM acquired almost 2,400 numeric domain names through an undetermined method.
After this incident, SIDN says it will have to implement more regulating and limiting measures against future domain hijackers and that it is planning on monitoring the process more closely in the future. However, no word has been released on how many domain names will be returned or when that is expected to happen.
SIDN says 14,409 domain names were registered by 298 companies during the landrush with 007.nl being the most popular numeric domain name requested.
