Mar 13, 2007 : Webhosting Day Focuses on the New

📅 - Webhosting Day (webhostingday.de) the European hosting conference held by hosting firm Intergenia (intergenia.de) began Wednesday at the Phantasialand amusement park near Cologne, Germany, with most of the program going according to schedule, despite the added pressure of several hundred more attendees than anticipated.

While organizers had expected roughly 800 attendees, several hundred more than attended last year's event, Dr. Jens Boecker, a sort of master of ceremonies for the event, announced at the start of Wednesday's sessions that registration had reached almost 1,000 attendees.

The added attendance resulted in a bit of a crowd at the registration desk and some minor delays in the day's program, as well as some more major interference in the event's Internet connection.

The show itself went on almost without a delay, with day-one keynotes in some cases quite similar to the previous shows, but with major sponsors focusing specifically on new developments in the business.

Michael Korbascher, Microsoft's (microsoft.com) director of Web and application hosting for the communications sector, presented on "next gen hosting," saying that hosting providers are at a point where they have to adopt not just new technology but new business models - often the more difficult of the two propositions for business. From Microsoft's perspective, of course, that new technology includes the recently launched Windows Server 2008 and IIS7, tools that include features specifically designed to support the hosting market.

Serguei Beloussov, CEO of Parallels (parallels.com) followed with a presentation on the new infrastructure models in the hosting business, beginning with a lengthy discussion of the new vision of his company, formerly known as SWsoft, which has recently undergone the process of rebuilding its corporate brand and the branding of its products. Championing the virtualization- and automation-fuelled hosting infrastructure Parallels products support, Beloussov said the Web hosting market has become an application hosting market.

Other day-one keynote sessions included visionapp's Jens Schneider and Q-Layer's Kristof De Speigeleer.

Webhosting Day continues, and concludes, on Thursday, March 13 with presentations by Fujitsu Siemens's Michael Homborg, Cloudmark's Jamie de Guerre, Intel's Shannon Poulin and Open X-Change's Raphael Laguna de la Vera, along with more workshop sessions in the afternoon.
