Sep 28, 2007 : NZ Anti-Spam Law Seen as Ineffective
📅 - Email marketing firm Inbox (inbox.net.nz) announced this week it believes that the recently implemented anti-spam legislation in New Zealand has been ineffective and says there are better ways to combat the rising tide of spam.
Under the Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act, which was enforced September 5, spammers could face fines of hundreds of thousands of dollars. But the law only covers New Zealand and according to Inbox, a large bulk of the spam comes from overseas.
According to reports, Jerry Flay, an email specialist with Inbox, says when the legislation was conceived, its whole point was to diminish the volume of spam that New Zealanders were being subjected to and in terms of ensuring that New Zealand doesn't become a safe haven for spammers, it has worked. However, Flay says this has also proved that there aren't really any spammers in New Zealand, which means the Act has done nothing to account for foreign spam.
Flay sees email suffering as a business tool and form of communication in New Zealand unless measures are taken to protect it from spam coming from abroad. He suggests a combination of authentication and a national whitelist adopted by Internet service providers to ensure that legitimate email users aren't affected by the legislation. Flay says this will bring the power of email back to the desktop while keeping foreign spam out of the picture.
