Jan, 2000 : Ebone To Provide Hosting, IP Services For European
📅 - European Web hosting and network services company Ebone announced today that it been chosen as the European provider of Web hosting and related infrastructure for the Internet's newest Top Level Domain (TLD): .name.
The announcement came following an agreement between the GNR (Global Name Registry) and ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number) to license the world's first for personal domain registration.
ICANN selected GNR to develop, maintain and supervise the new TLD, which will assign individuals the domain equivalent of their own name with a .name extension. Someone named Bob Smith, for example, would have the domain www.Bob.Smith.name. An email address would read Bob@Smith.name.
This is the second major agreement between Ebone and a renowned domain registrar in the past year. Last year, VeriSign Inc. (formerly Network Solutions) chose Ebone to host its only European registration server for their .com, .net and .org TLDs.
"The agreement with GNR underpins Ebone's position as the most experienced provider in the domain name registration space," said Frode Greisen, Ebone's Chief Internet Officer. "GNR's creative approach to giving people a space of their own on the Internet for life is a step in the right direction."
The .name extension is the first and only TLD that will be reserved exclusively for individuals. No date has been set for the official launch of the new extension.
