Jul, 2001 : IBM To Cut 1,000 Jobs From Global Services Division
📅 - IBM confirmed published reports yesterday suggesting the company is set to slash up to 1,000 jobs from its Global Services division.
The jobs will be cut from the company's fastest-growing division because the company has determined the skills of certain workers don't match the needs of customers.
The 1,000 jobs represent less than one percent of the company's 150,000 employees in their Global Services division, which provides outsourcing and consulting services for businesses.
"We're doing a skills rebalancing," IBM spokeswoman Jan Butler told CNET, who originally broke the story. "As a result, some jobs will be eliminated."
Butler was also quick to point out that IBM periodically makes reassessments such as these, and pointed out that the cuts were not a result of a reduction in global spending or poor market conditions.
"We had an excellent first quarter," she told CNET, and pointed out that the company was still hiring in other consulting divisions. "We will, in fact, end the year with more people than we started (with)" she said.
