Aug, 2001 : Ebone Transforms Real Media's Network Infrastructure
📅 - Real Media (realmedia.com), the world's second largest online advertising company, says it has cut the cost of its networking, communications and media activities by using an intranet solution built on advanced IP services from Ebone (ebone.com). Real Media now has a simple, secure and flexible platform to increase the efficiency of its internationaloperations by upgrading to IP-based virtual private network (IP-VPN).
Ebone's IP-VPN technology eliminates the usually prohibitive costs of atraditional Frame Relay or ATM private network, while adding flexibility andscalability. This model allows for local Internet breakout from multi-sitesthat can increase efficiency in terms of cost and resources, as opposed toFrame Relay where all traffic is directed through the central hub to theinternet, from multiple sites.
Real Media plans to host its office applications on its servers co-locatedin Ebone's data centre in Geneva which staff across Europe can accesstransparently. Previously, Real Media servers were replicated at multiplesites around Europe.
Hans-Joerg During, MIS manager of Real Media Europe said, "Today's businessenvironment, particularly in new media, changes rapidly and to reacteffectively we needed to change the way we managed our computinginfrastructure. But to do that we needed a network platform that was secure, reliable and delivered high performance with superior quality of service. Ofall the suppliers, Ebone was the best contender because of its IP experienceand its unique pan-European reach and support."
The network links up to nine Real Media sites around Europe - Lausanne HeadQuarters, Geneva, London, Madrid, Paris, Hamburg, Munich, Zurich andStockholm. At these sites Ebone provides managed firewalls, ISDN back-up,traffic prioritisation services and Internet access, operating for RealMedia a complete intranet, extranet and Internet solution.
The benefit of IP-VPN services over Frame or ATM technology is that as RealMedia introduces new applications to the network, connections are readilyavailable without virtual network route or capacity planning. Additionally, since each IP-VPN site has both private network service and connection tothe Internet, flexible bandwidth is available on an as-needed basis.
The Ebone IP-VPN's high-level security capabilities could also benefit RealMedia's own clients in the future, since they would be able to enter partsof the Real Media extranet to access services such as on-line productdemonstrations and technical support applications. Real Media are expectingto implement a similar solution as the one currently deployed for theirintranet.
Engineered for zero packet loss and IP bandwidth of up to 155 Mbps, Ebone'sIP-VPN has simplified Real Media's intranet management and reduced the needfor expensive, often proprietary, technology and communications equipment.
