Aug, 2001 : I-Next Expands VoIP Network in Latin America
📅 - In another declaration ofvoice-over-IP (VoIP) momentum around the world, CiscoSystems, Inc., a worldwide leader innetworking for the Internet, has announced that i-Next, the new data division of Operadora Protel(protel.net.mx), has expanded its packet voice IPservices to six cities in Mexico and is carrying aboutfive million minutes of voice traffic monthly. i-Nextplans to expand to three additional cities shortly andgrow its service base to 35 cities in the next six totwelve months.
When i-Next decided to build out its VoIP network, itoriginally focused on reducing the cost of longdistance services for its commercial subscribers.Today, i-Next is expanding its IP network to offercustomers enhanced services such as dedicated Internetaccess, wholesale dial, virtual private networks aswell as Multi-Protocol Label Switching VPNs and longdistance VoIP.
"Cisco was the only company that presented a long-termstrategy to reduce our costs -- and they've delivered," said Benigno Perez-Lizaur, CEO of i-Next. "In thetwo months since we've turned up service, we'veachieved savings of around $145,000 each month."
The i-Next Cisco Powered Network includes Ciscoaward-winning AS5300 voice gateways, as well as CiscoSC2200 Signaling Controllers for SS7 interconnect withthe Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in morethan 50 cities throughout Mexico.
The IP backbone includes the industry-leading Cisco12012 Internet Routers and 12008 Internet Routers,which deliver high scalability, flexibility, andperformance for service delivery across all networksand locations. In June, Cisco announced that its Cisco12000 series Internet Routers provide a leadingsolution for carriers who want to deploydelay-sensitive applications such as voice andmultimedia in IP networks, based on Miercom lab testresults. At the i-Next network edge are Cisco 3640access servers, AccessPath-V3 and Cisco 7206 routers.
Prior to building a total IP network, i-Next had atraditional telephone network offering long distance,800 and 900 numbers as well as pre-paid calling cards.With its new, open standards-based Cisco IPinfrastructure, i-Next can now quickly and morecost-effectively offer higher margin services.
