Sep, 2001 : BellSouth Commits $1m to Red Cross Relief Fund


📅 - During an employee meeting broadcast over the company's closed circuit television network this morning, BellSouth (bellsouth.com)chairman and CEO Duane Ackerman announced the corporation is donating $1million to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

The contribution is in response to the terrorist attacks earlier this weekin New York City and Washington, D.C. The meeting, broadcast to almost 300work locations across BellSouth's nine-state region, was part of theNational Day of Remembrance and Prayer called for by president George W.Bush.
"I have asked us all to gather to join with our fellow Americans," saidAckerman, who conducted the morning meeting, "and, in this national comingtogether, to find some measure of reassurance and healing." Ackerman praisedthe tremendous acts of courage by the victims, their families and friends,firefighters, police officers and medical personnel. He also commendedBellSouth employees for their compassion and their efforts on behalf of thevictims and their communities. "Our hearts ache," he said. "We want to helpin some way, but we feel helpless in the face of suffering and death on thisscale. "We give blood," he continued. "BellSouth employees have lined up inrecord number to give blood at locations throughout the region. We sendmoney and clothes. Our BellSouth Pioneers are working with relief andemergency organizations."
Ackerman said that, as a company, BellSouth has offered resources to itscolleagues at Verizon and AT&T, and Cingular Wireless has donated 1,500handsets and will deploy 2,000 more to assist in recovery efforts. "Our mostpowerful act," he said, "our one true triumph over this tragedy, is ourunity as a company and a nation."
