Sep, 2001 : RNi and Telebyte to Manufacture 2.4 GHz Wireless Routers
📅 - Renaissance Networking Inc. (rni.net), a leader in theresearch, development and deployment of broadband wireless Internet accessnetworks, Friday announced a strategic alliance with Telebyte Inc.(telebyteusa.com), a manufacturer and developer of data communications and broadband products, to begin manufacturing a new 2.4 GHz Broadband Wireless Internet Protocol Router.
The two companies agreed to leverage each other's strengths to produce aBroadband Wireless IP Router, which was developed specifically to helpInternet Service Providers provide broadband Internet access through theairwaves versus a wired connection. RNi engineers developed the wirelessdesign of the router and will continue to provide the research anddevelopment for future product development. In addition to contributing itsown development expertise, Telebyte also will provide financial backing forproduct development and manufacturing capacity to produce the routers.
"We spent the last three years developing this product line as we rolled outour broadband wireless service to hundreds of customers in a 300-square-milenetwork in and around Phoenix, Ariz.," said Jeff Clark, RNi's president andCEO. "After proving that our hardware was cost-effective and reliable enoughto provide guaranteed Service Level Agreements , we began discussions withmany other ISPs that wanted to provide the same type of high-speed Internetaccess to their customer base.
"However, in order to be able to meet the demand of several thousand ISPsthat still only offer dial-up access, we needed additional manufacturingcapacity. The agreement with Telebyte allows us to meet that objective aswell as help drive down costs to below several hundred dollars persubscriber."
The Broadband Wireless IP Router is a low-cost, outdoor customer premisesequipment solution that will be manufactured by Telebyte specifically foruse by ISPs that need a way, other than DSL or cable modems, to deliverbroadband services to their customers. The Broadband Wireless IP Router isbased on 802.11 Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum standards and can delivertheoretical throughput of 11 Mbps second. The router is designed with amodular radio interface to provide simple migration paths to futurestandards such as 802.11a and a wide variety of wireless frequencies such as2.4, 2.5 or 5.8 Ghz.
The Broadband Wireless IP Router provides service via a high-speed dataconnection that sends and receives signals from a wireless transmitter to awireless router located at the customer's premises. Data travels through theair from the transmit site in Radio Frequency format to the customer's site,where the wireless router converts the RF signal into Ethernet.
Customers can use the wireless service to bypass telecommunications chargesfor expensive local loops and costly equipment usually needed to establish aT1 (1.5 Mbps) or higher connections.
The Broadband Wireless IP Router is available now in limited quantities forbeta customers, with full production runs beginning in fourth quarter of2001. Pricing is currently targeted for as low as $300 per subscriber involume quantities.
