Nov, 2001 : U.S. Gov't Selects NeuStar to Manage .US domain

📅 November 1, 2001 - NeuStar, Inc. (neustar.biz), a neutral third party provider of mission-critical services, has been selected by the Department of Commerce (DoC) to manage the authoritative Internet address space for the United States - ".US". The selection was the culmination of a public discussion of the .US domain that began in 1998 and was made after a comprehensive competitive evaluation process. NeuStar was awarded a four-year contract with two optional one-year renewals.

For the first time, all U.S. residents, government entities, public serviceorganizations and businesses will be able to establish an American identityon the Internet. Short memorable Internet addresses (i.e. "johnsmith.us","publicservice.us", "mycompany.us", etc.) were not possible under theprevious .US policy.
This policy change, along with technical innovation, significant operationalimprovements, and promotion of .US, will make possible consumer, "e-Gov",business and public service applications that lead to widespread use andacceptance of the .US space. NeuStar will, however, preserve and support theexisting names and structure within .US.
