Dec 17, 2001 : IBM Ships Regatta Server On Schedule

📅 December 17, 2001 - IBM (ibm.com) has announced the availability of the IBM eServer p690, code-named "Regatta," which began shipping in volume onFriday. Early customers include San Francisco-based Gap Inc. (gap.com), which has selected the p690 to run retail supply chain software for its Gap, Banana Republic and Old Navy brands.

Introduced on schedule after a five-year development effort, IBM says theeServer offers better performance than competing high-end servers for halfthe price.
The eServer p690 uses an innovative system-on-a-chip design, with each chipcontaining two one-gigahertz-plus processors, a large memory cache and I/Ointerconnected with other components using a new distributed switch design.This architecture enables Regatta to offer high power and reliability usingfewer processors than competing systems.
Built with technology from IBM's Project eLiza initiative, the eServer p690is the industry's only UNIX server that offers multiple layers ofself-healing technologies designed to allow the system to continueoperating, even through component failures and system errors, IBM said. TheeServer p690 can either be operated as a single large server or divided intoas many as 16 "virtual" servers, running any combination of the AIX 5L andLinux operating systems.
Gap Inc. has selected two Regatta servers to run its planning retailsoftware which is intended to optimize the company's planning process acrossall store formats, geographies and its supply chain.
