Jan, 2002 : Aleron Announces All-MPLS IP Backbone Network

📅 - Aleron (aleron.com), an IP network services provider based in Reston, VA announced yesterday the availability of its new IP network infrastructure, an OC-48 (2.5 Gbps) wavelength-based network that uses advanced MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) technology across its entire core network, making possible new network applications and value-addedservices.

"Aleron has taken an industry leading step in the implementation of advancedIP networks," said Aleron CEO Paolo Guidi. "This MPLS-based OC-48 wavelengthnetwork will enable Aleron to provide excellent IP backbone service qualityas well as innovative MPLS-based network services to customers who requirecost-efficient, flexible, and scalable capabilities to supplement or replacelegacy data networks."
MPLS enables IP packets to travel in a "switched" fashion directly overoptical networks, providing customers with decreased network latency androuter hops. MPLS, when combined with associated resource reservation andtraffic engineering technologies, also permits the construction of highlyconfigurable IP-based VPNs, as well as QoS-defined applications. Althoughother providers have enabled MPLS on their networks, Aleron says itsupgraded optical network will be the first to fully use MPLS across its corebackbone network for commercial network services.
Aleron's wavelength network architecture includes points of presence in tencities across the US: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami,New York City, Palo Alto CA, Seattle and Washington DC. Aleron also providesadditional access POPs in Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Indianapolis,Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Raleigh and San Diego.
"Aleron's strategy of investing intelligently in our IP network capabilitiesrather than in capital-intensive physical transmission networks is what hasallowed us to fully implement these advanced technologies and leap ahead inthe backbone IP network market," Guidi said. "Aleron has established itselfas an innovator, and we will continue to lead the way in the deployment ofadvanced IP network technologies."
