📅 - Internet giant AOL Time Warner Inc. (aol.com) is in negotiations to acquire Red Hat Inc.(redhat.com), distributor of the operating system Linux, the Washington Post reported over the weekend, citing unidentified sources close to the matter.
The discussions were tentative, and it was not known how much AOL, thelargest American ISP and the second-largest U.S. cable television provider, would pay for Red Hat, according to the Post. Spokespersons for the companies refused to comment on the allegednegotiations. Linux has been gaining favor with businesses lately, especially to powerheavy-duty Web and network servers. The proposed acquisition is the latestindication that AOL is looking for alternative software to that made byrival Microsoft, which runs 90 percent of the world's personal computers, the Washington Post said. To compete with Microsoft, AOL could unite its Internet service with RedHat's operating system and could be configured to override Windows whilelaunching a version of Linux, sources told the newspaper.
