Feb, 2002 : Ebone Upgrades Austrian Academic Computer Network
📅 - ACOnet (aco.net), the Austrian Academic Computer Network, hasupgraded its IP and broadband network with Ebone due to growinguser demand, the need to increase network effectiveness, and to improveaccess to other international networks. Ebone, which first provided ACOnetwith broadband services in 1992, has upgraded ACOnet's bandwidth Internetconnectivity to 600Mbps.
ACOnet connects over 200,000 users at Austria's leading universities, schools and academic institutions using broadband IP technology. Theacademic world is suited to use IP technology because of the large anddispersed number of users sharing bandwidth-hungry information such asmeteorological, scientific and nuclear research data. ACOnet is alsoconnected to other academic networks like the pan-European Gigabit Researchand Education Network (GEANT). ACOnet was established in 1986 to provide theFederal Ministry of Science and Research with a reliable network service.
Dr Peter Rastl, director of Vienna University's computer centre and aluminary in the development of European and Austrian Internet technology, said, "Key to us is guaranteed security and network availability. Ebone isable to ensure that our users consistently experience peak performance withnear zero congestion. Ebone also gives us the freedom to optimisecommunication by offering bandwidth on-demand to meet further increasingcapacity needs. We were particularly impressed with the close contact we hadwith network management and the good response we have always received fromEbone."
ACOnet was one of the original components of the Ebone network and beforethat an original member of EARN (European Academic Research Network),positioning ACONet as pivotal to the development of Europe's own Internet.
