To address enterprise demand for extension of Ethernet traffic outside localarea networks, OPTera Packet Edge 100 aims to help service providersmaximize return on existing SDH infrastructure by increasing bandwidthefficiency, and by reducing network complexity and operating costs, thecompany said.
OPTera Packet Edge 100 enables service providers to transport enterpriseEthernet traffic between sites by supporting high Quality of ServiceEthernet Private Line connectivity services, reducing the need for routerson customer premises. The technology also offers enhanced attributes likebandwidth tunability, which can create additional value for packet-orientedmultiservice offers.
"Our customers have a large installed base of SDH networks, and it iscrucial that we help them to realize their full value," said Marco Pagani, president, Metro Optical, Nortel Networks. "This Ethernet over SDH solutioncreates a new service for our OPTera Metro 4000 platform, enabling serviceproviders to offer excellent service levels to enterprise customers, and toprovide greater granularity in the bandwidth they offer compared to TDM."
"Additional benefits include our pioneering use of virtual concatenation, which uses SDH bandwidth more efficiently, and the ability to provisionbandwidth to customers on demand," Pagani added. "This is in addition tooffering new Ethernet based data services outside the LAN at a minimumcapital and operational cost per customer."
OPTera Packet Edge 100 is part of Nortel Networks Metro Optical solutionsportfolio. It is a plug-in Ethernet switch card for OPTera Metro 4000 thatdelivers integrated Layer 2 Ethernet connectivity services across arbitrarytopology, multi-vendor, multi-domain SDH-based global networks using VCX.
