Feb 18, 2002 : Dell Releases New PowerEdge Servers


📅 - Dell today announced two new enterpriseservers, the PowerEdge 1650 and PowerEdge 4600. Both servers offer newtechnologies to support database, e-mail, security and file/printapplications.

The PowerEdge 1650 is a tier one server that offers enterprise-levelfeatures of hot-plug redundant power and fans, in a 1.75-inch tall packagedesigned for space-constrained data centers. The PowerEdge 4600 featuresIntel's latest Xeon processors and is the first server to offer theServerWorks Grand Champion HE (GC-HE) SystemI/O chipset for faster overallsystem performance, Dell says.
Both PowerEdge servers are equipped with Dell's portfolio of OpenManagetools. To enable remote management, the PowerEdge 4600 offers customers aDell Remote Assistant Card (DRAC III) enabling out-of-band management andpower-up capabilities in the event the server goes down. The PowerEdge 1650offers the choice of either DRAC III or an optional Embedded Remote Accessfeature that offers remote management at a lower cost.
"Dell is known for developing enterprise servers that address the uniquerequirements of our customers and then offering the systems at industryleading prices," said Randy Groves, vice president of Dell's EnterpriseSystems Group. "When combined with Dell's software and services expertise,these new PowerEdge servers deliver the performance, availability andscalability required for today's Internet-intensive, business-criticalcomputing needs."
The PowerEdge 1650 supports dual Intel Pentium III processors, up to 4GB ofmemory, three hot-plug, SCSI hard drives, redundant power supplies and fans,dual embedded Gigabit network interface cards, an embedded RAID option andremote management. These features allow the PowerEdge 1650 to be used notonly for network infrastructure or Internet applications, such as Webhosting, but also to run a broad range of applications including MicrosoftCommerce Server or a Microsoft Exchange node in a storage area network. ThePowerEdge 1650 also will be available as a Microsoft Windows Powered or RedHat Linux Web server appliance.
The PowerEdge 4600 features one or two Intel Xeon processors at speeds of upto 2.2GHz with a 400MHz front-side bus and support for up to ten hard diskdrives for an internal storage capacity of up to 730GB. It features hot-plugdisk drives and PCI-X slots, hot-plug redundant fans and power supplies,robust system monitoring and notification features, clustering capabilitiesand an optional embedded RAID card with battery-backed cache.
The PowerEdge 1650 and 4600 are available with factory installation ofMicrosoft Windows 2000 Server, Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server,Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Red Hat Linux 7.2. The new servers are alsocertified and validated for Novell NetWare.
Dell also offers customers a suite of enterprise computing services forrapid deployment and system uptime. Services available for the PowerEdgeservers include Custom Factory Integration of operating systems and softwareapplications, onsite server installation, next-business-day response and7x24 direct line software support of operating systems, systems managementand select Microsoft applications.
The PowerEdge 1650 and PowerEdge 4600 servers are available with pricesstarting at $1,699 and $3,499, respectively.
