Mar, 2002 : Fasthosts Launches Multi-Platform Web Hosting

📅 March 21, 2002 - Fasthosts Internet Limited (fasthosts.com), a leading UK Web hosting company serving over 500,000 Web sites, announced on Wednesday that it completed the implementation of Linux Web server technology, an enhancement to its existing Windows-based offerings.

According to Fasthosts, the company has built a significant business in the UK through offering Web hosting plans based on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform. The addition of support for Linux, says Fasthosts, will offer customers a choice of operating systems, and the company's hosting technology will allow them to switch between platforms at any time.
?Now, when one of our customers sets up a new domain name on their account,? says Jarrod Robinson, director of products and services at Fasthosts, ?they can choose between a Linux Web server or a Windows Web server. If their requirements later change they can easily switch between platforms using their web-based control panel.?
Fasthosts says the new development will be of particular interest to the company's network of resellers and Web designers, who operate and manage their entire operations, including Web sites, email and databases, out of one central Web-based control panel.
While a Fasthosts reseller could previously manage a number of accounts, each on its own ?virtual server,? each of these virtual servers can now be powered either by Windows 2000 or Red Hat Linux, and switched at will by the reseller.

The deal is reportedly worth $497 million, which is the price Warburg Pincus has agreed to pay. Warburg Pincus is headquartered in New York City and was established in 1966.
