Sun Executive Says HP-Compaq Merger Provides Window Of Opportunity
📅 - John Shoemaker, Sun's executive vice president in charge of computer systems of Sun Microsystems said that the expected the merger of Hewlett-Packard and Compaq will create short-term opportunities for competitors like Sun, because the management of the new, conglomerate will be too consumed with integration issues to offer strong competition.

Shoemaker, who was involved in over a dozen acquisitions by Sun, believes that the melding of the two companies will confuse employees and customers in terms of what the new unified company will now offer them.
In a campaign to block the $19 billion acquisition, a protesting board member has further complicated HP's complex takeover.
Although the final count won't be ready for several weeks, HP says preliminary estimates show it won a shareholder vote on the acquisition, while those opposed said the vote was too close to call with a margin of victory of less than one percent.
Having already approved the merger, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission endorses the HP and Compaq's argument that the merged firm could be a stronger vendor of high-end server computers using 64-bit chips. Others argue that Sun, Dell and IBM's failure to complain to regulators about the deal showed the merged firm was unlikely to be a better competitor.
