May 31, 2002 : Web Host Restores Controversial Video

📅 - Video footage depicting the murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl has been put back online, tech publication Wired.com reported this week.

Pearl was kidnapped and murdered in Pakistan earlier this year. Last week, Wired reported that Web hosting firm Pro Hosters (Prohosters.com -> hostinger.com) had been asked by FBI agents from the Bureau's Newark field office to remove the video from Ogrish.com, a Web site the company hosts that offers pictures, videos and news stories of an off-color nature.
Pro Hosters owner Ted Hickman Jr. consulted with the owner of ogrish.com, and the video was subsequently removed. However, after consulting the American Civil Liberties Union, the company again conferred with the owner of ogrish.com and decided to restore the video, Wired reported.
"We have decided to take the hot seat in this position, mainly because we and ogrish.com believe strongly in freedom of speech and freedom of press and the First Amendment," Hickman told Wired. "It's definitely something that I think people should be able to view if they choose to."
