Jun, 2002 : Sun Microsystems Introduces Low-End Server
📅 - Server manufacturer Sun Microsystems Inc. (sun.com) announced on Tuesday that it is releasing the new Sun Fire V480 server, an entry-level rack-optimized device with up to four 900 MHz UltraSPARC III processors.
Starting at $23,000 for the base configuration, the Sun Fire V480, says Sun, is positioned in the company's entry level server family between the 280R and V880 servers
"With the new Sun Fire V480 server, we're building on the stellar success of our entry level Sun Fire server family with a premium four-way server, incorporating enterprise features and performance at prices that will certainly attract Wintel users along with our traditional customer base," says John Davis, senior director of Sun Microsystem's Volume Systems Products. "The Sun Fire V480 server offers high performance, a dense rack-optimized design, large memory and Sun StorEdge bundles to get directly at the heart of what enterprise customers are demanding today: better price and performance, more flexible systems, and lower cost of ownership."
Venturing into the entry-level two-to-eight processor server market placed Sun, a company better known for its million-dollar high-end servers, in direct competition with technology giant Microsoft Corporation as it, too, ventures into the low-end server market from its traditional business of software development.
