Aug 2, 2002 : Sprint Faces Class Action Spam Lawsuit
📅 - A Salt Lake City, Utah law firm has reportedly filed a class action lawsuit against telecommunications company Sprint, on behalf of Utah residents, saying the residents have received unsolicited emails from the company since anti-spam legislation was put into place.
Law firm Nelson, Snuffer, Dahle & Paulsen announced on Wednesday that it had filed the suit against Sprint on behalf of client Terry Gillman. The case is said to be pending in the Third District Court of Salt Lake City.
The firm says its claim is based on a section of the Utah statute and the results of a similar case in Washington State. The Utah Code section 13-44-101, says the company, requires a sender of commercial email to state its legal name, street address and Internet domain name, as well as providing a way for recipients to request that no more email be sent. The subject line must also begin with the four characters ?ADV:?
Though it has not provided any specific information about the emails, the law firm said in its statement that Sprint has violated this section of the code.
The statute, designed to stop Spam, came into effect in May, but requires legal action to be enforced.
