The lawsuit alleged that VeriSign sent false and misleading "Domain Name Expiration Notices" to BulkRegsiter customers in an effort to lure them to VeriSign.
BulkRegister said the exact terms of the settlement were confidential, but said that it would reimburse its distributors and customers who were injured by the VeriSign campaign. They will be credited the fees paid to VeriSign, transferred back to BukRegister, and will receive a free one-year extension on each of the affected domains.
"Settling the lawsuit against VeriSign is in the best interest of our members as it allows them to recoup damages and resume building towards the future," says BulkRegister's CEO, Thomas Cunningham. "Each of our members is important to BulkRegister, and we will continue to provide a high level of service and support to ensure their success. A key component of that is our Brand Integrity Program, as now more than ever, protecting a company's brand on the Internet has become a business critical issue."
BulkRegister's lawsuit against VeriSign was quickly followed by a number of suits from other registrars. A suit filed by Go Daddy Software resulted in an injunction against VeriSign from sending the notices to any of its competitors.
It was reported this week that the Federal Trade Commission has begun an investigation into VeriSign's marketing practices.
