Aug 14, 2002 : HP Makes Major Server Moves
📅 - Computer equipment manufacturer HP (hp.com) made some major movements in the server market on Tuesday, announcing that the company has regained the number one position in US shipments of industry standard IA-32 servers in the second quarter of 2002, according to Gartner research organization Dataquest.
The company also saw significant sales momentum for its combined Linux-based email solutions with email systems provider Sendmail Inc., running on HP ProLiant servers.
HP says it regained the top spot in the US for the IA-32 server shipments, with 28.7 percent market share, following the combination of the market shares of HP and Compaq. According to HP, Gartner's second quarter data reinforces HP's unit share leadership in the overall US server market, with 26.4 percent of shipments.
"Despite competitors' efforts to take market share at a time when they thought we were vulnerable, the fact is that they haven't made a dent. Our value proposition resonates clearly with customers and we continue to lead the industry standard server business with HP ProLiant servers," said Mary McDowell, senior vice president and general manager, HP Industry Standard Servers.
In its relationship with Sendmail Inc. began with the former Compaq, packaging Sendmail's Mailstream Manager and Integrated Mail Suite with Compaq's ProLiant server and SuSE Linux enterprise server. Sendmail signed a similar agreement with HP in February of 2002.
"Organizations are revamping their email systems to deal with the increase in demand for value added email services," says Greg Olson, co-founder and chairman of Sendmail, Inc. "The HP and Sendmail package is ideal for organizations standardizing on the Linux platform and in need of a scalable email system with a low cost of ownership and strong content management capabilities."
