Aug 19, 2002 : Record Labels Sue ISPs over Music Site

📅 - Several of the world's largest record companies sued a collection of Internet service and network providers on Friday, alleging that their networks helped in the delivery of a Web site that allows the illegal copying of recorded music.

The copyright infringement lawsuit seeks an order from the court requiring the ISPs to block traffic to and from the site, Listen4Ever.com, on their networks.
Because Listen4Ever is based in China, say the record companies, they have not yet been able to determine who operates the Web site.
Among the record companies involved in the suit are UMG Recordings, Sony Music Entertainment, The RCA Records Label and Warner Brothers. The ISPs named in the suit include AT&T Broadband Corp., Cable & Wireless USA, Sprint Corp., Advanced Network Services and UUNET Technologies.
The suit alleges that the Listen4Ever site allows for the illegal copying and distribution of material by such artists as Christina Aguilera, Bruce Springsteen, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eric Clapton, Barbara Streisand, Lenny Kravitz and Whitney Houston. The site also allegedly distributed material that had not yet been commercially released.
According to the record companies, the site contains no contact information, and the domain appears to be registered to an individual in China. Because the site seems focused on a US audience, written in English and focusing on US material, the record companies say basing the site in China appears to be an effort to avoid US copyright laws.
As of Monday, the Listen4Ever site appeared to have been taken down.
