Filed in federal district court in August, the suit charges Domain Registry of America with using deceptive and misleading tactics in its efforts to sign up new customers from Register.com's user base. This suit, one among a number of WhoIs databse-related concerns, charges that Domain Registry of America illegally spidered Register.com's WhoIs database to find names for solicitation. Register.com says the company used the database to contact customers with misleading direct mail advising them to ?renew? their domain name registrations by sending payment to Domain Registry. According to Register.com, the solicitations do not mention the fact that it was Register.com that originally registered those domains, or explain that by ?renewing? the domain, the customers would be transferring management of the domain to one of Register.com's direct competitors. The e-mails contained a link providing directions on transferring registration from Register.com to Domain Registry of America. And the lawsuit alleges that Domain Registry personnel falsely informed Regsiter.com customers that Domain Registry of America had merged with Register.com or that it was handling the billing for that company.
