Mar 28, 2003 : ICANN to OK Non-English Domains

📅 - Reports released this week indicated that the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (icann.org) was expected to approve technical standards that would allow domain names in languages other than English to be available within the next few weeks or months.

ICANN chairman Vincent G. Cerf said at a ICANN meeting this week that the body has made significant progress this week, adding that the technical standards were ready, but there was policy work to be done.
The Internet's addressing computers currently understand only the 26 English letters, 10 numerals and a hyphen, along with periods for splitting addresses into sections. In order for other languages to be recognized, they must be converted into a string of permitted characters.
For several years, the Internet Engineering Task Force has been working on a plan for smoothly converting the system, behind the scenes. Though some non-English names have been available on a test basis, ICANN approval would make the new standards official. Even if the other languages were added, domain suffixes, such as .com or .net, would remain in English for the time being.
The schedule for the availability of non-English domain names would depend on the extent to which technicians using those languages have transplanted their alphabets into Internet protocol, said Cerf.
