Mar, 2003 : Al-Jazeera Troubles Continue, Site Hacked
📅 - Tough times continued this week for the Arabic and English Web sites of Arab satellite television network Al-Jazeera, which experienced defacement by hackers Thursday, after suffering major performance failures earlier in the week as a result of traffic spikes and possible attacks.
Traffic to Al-Jazeera's site was redirected on Thursday to another Web page featuring a stars-and-stripes logo and the slogan ?Let Freedom Ring.? The stars-and-stripes site was hosted for free by domain registration and Web hosting company Dotster. The company noticed a large spike in traffic Thursday morning, originally thinking Al-Jazeera had signed up for one of its free accounts. Dotster responded by disabling the page, and Al-Jazeera's hosting company re-routed traffic to its original servers. According to reports, Network Solutions Inc. was tricked into making technical changes turning over temporary control of the Al-Jazeera sites to somebody impersonating an employee. Changes were fixed Thursday, but it was expected to take at least 12 hours before the network's sites would be available worldwide again.
