May 13, 2003 : Intel: Itanium 2 Can Crash Servers

📅 - Intel Corp. (intel.com) warned customers on Monday of an electrical problem in some of its Itanium 2 server processors that can lead to unpredictable behavior and cause severs to crash.

Intel spokesman Robert Manetta said that the problem only affects some of the processors and under specific conditions involving particular types of data and computing instructions. He could not say how many chips might be affected by the flaw.
Intel also announced that it will replace the chip for affected customers. Alternatively, customers can opt to use software to lower the clock speed on the chip to 800 megahertz.
Based in Santa Clara, California, Intel is a developer of semiconductor manufacturing and technology.
