nic.md is the official domain registrar for Moldova, managed by the Public Institution "Information Technology and Cyber Security Service" (ITCSS). This institution was established following the Government Decision No. 414 on May 8, 2018, which aimed to consolidate data centers in the public sector and rationalize the administration of state information systems.The ITCSS is a public institution dedicated to ensuring the effective administration, maintenance, and development of Moldova’s information technology infrastructure. This includes overseeing the Telecommunications System of public administration authorities, which is part of the special communications network, and managing state information systems. Additionally, ITCSS is responsible for the unique infrastructure of public keys for the Government, ensuring robust cybersecurity measures are in place across these systems.
As the National Registrar of the .md domain, ITCSS aims to make the domain registration process accessible and straightforward, adhering to the "first come, first served" principle. Presently, around 36,000 domain names are registered within the .md zone. The annual fee for registering a domain under the Top Level Domain .md is 450 lei, equivalent to approximately $25.34.
To facilitate ease of use, ITCSS has developed a user-friendly interface for managing domains. This platform allows users to view all their registered domains in one place, along with details such as expiry dates, payment, and renewal options, and the ability to modify related data. The service also ensures that users receive timely notifications about domain renewal dates, sending multiple reminders via email starting one month before expiration. Users can generate their own payment accounts to make the renewal process as simple and efficient as possible.
Furthermore, ITCSS offers a secure and quick online domain transfer service. Users can request a transfer authorization code directly from their nic.md account, ensuring a smooth and safe transfer to another holder.
