Data center colocation services let enterprises deploy and manage their own servers, storage and network devices inside Rackspace Technology facilities while avoiding the cost and complexity of building and operating a private data center. Customers retain ownership and administrative control over hardware, operating systems, security controls and application stacks while Rackspace provides the raised floor, conditioned power, redundant cooling and physical protection required for mission critical infrastructure. Dedicated rack space, power configurations and cross connects can be tailored to each environment so existing on premises architectures can be extended or entirely moved into colocation with minimal redesign.

Operational excellence is supported by more than two decades of experience running production data centers using disciplined methodologies such as Japanese 5S and Lean Six Sigma, helping to enforce consistent standards, capacity planning and change management. Smart Hands technicians are available to handle on site tasks like installing and cabling new equipment, reseating components or performing visual inspections with service level commitments that target one hour response and 24 hour execution windows in selected facilities.

The global footprint of colocation locations and partner sites enables workloads to be placed close to major user populations or regulatory jurisdictions, while blended bandwidth from multiple Tier 1 carriers improves network resilience and helps control transit costs.

Multicloud connectivity via private networking services such as RackConnect Global makes it possible to link colocated gear with public clouds and private clouds, burst workloads between environments and build hybrid designs that keep sensitive data in the data center while using cloud services for elastic compute. A Data Freedom capability allows data stores to sit adjacent to, rather than inside, specific clouds so that organizations can work with multiple cloud providers, reduce egress charges and avoid vendor lock in.\n\nRackspace Technology data centers are engineered as enterprise grade facilities with at least N+1 redundancy across key subsystems including power distribution, cooling systems, network uplinks and core routing, and they are monitored around the clock by highly trained engineers.

Physical security typically combines controlled access procedures, biometric readers, surveillance cameras and intrusion detection to protect hosted equipment, while environmental controls and fire detection are designed to limit risk from localized incidents. Customers in more than one hundred countries rely on published guarantees that include a 100 percent network uptime commitment, service credits for qualifying interruptions and strong service levels around critical infrastructure availability and hardware replacement when Rackspace supplied components fail.

The colocation footprint spans strategically selected technical and financial hubs such as Amsterdam, Ashburn, Chicago, Dallas, Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Kansas City, London, New York City, San Jose, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney, giving organizations options for latency sensitive, data residency or business continuity designs. Colocation can be combined with consulting, migration and managed services to support modernization projects, integrate with hyperscale public cloud platforms and offload operational tasks so internal teams can focus on delivering new digital capabilities instead of maintaining facilities.

Founded in 1998 by Trinity University classmates Dirk Elmendorf, Pat Condon, and Richard Yoo, Rackspace Technology helped turn managed hosting into a recognizable service category. Early backing and leadership also came from Graham Weston and Morris Miller. The original formula was simple but important: lease the infrastructure and keep skilled administrators responsible for it after installation. That service culture became Fanatical Support and eventually the Fanatical Experience.

The present parent is Rackspace Technology, Inc., publicly traded on Nasdaq as RXT. Apollo took Rackspace private in 2016, and the company returned to the public market in 2020. Apollo nevertheless retained effective control, holding about 53% of voting power at the end of 2025. Gajen Kandiah became chief executive in September 2025. At year end, Rackspace employed approximately 5,000 people across 22 countries: 1,800 in North America, 800 in EMEA, and 2,400 in Asia-Pacific and Japan. Several acquisitions built today's wider platform. TriCore Solutions brought enterprise application management in 2017. Later that year, Datapipe added public-sector experience, international reach, managed multicloud, hosting, and colocation in what was then Rackspace's largest acquisition. RelationEdge expanded Salesforce consulting in 2018, followed in 2019 by Onica and its AWS expertise in cloud-native development, containers, serverless computing, IoT, machine learning, and application modernization. Datapipe still appears in a legacy portal and these companies remain among the corporate subsidiaries, but customers increasingly encounter one Rackspace brand.

At the infrastructure layer, managed hosting on dedicated bare metal combines single-tenant servers with configurable compute, storage, networking, firewalls, load balancing, backup, database administration, virtualization, and disaster recovery. Managed and Intensive service levels can cover the operating system as well as Microsoft SQL Server, .NET, IIS, and Linux application stacks. Database specialists work with MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MongoDB, Redis, and Elasticsearch. Linux and Windows are supported, but this is not an instant low-cost dedicated-server store. Architects scope the workload and most configurations proceed through consultation and a custom quote.

The private-cloud family spans VMware Cloud Foundation, OpenStack, Kubernetes, dedicated hardware, and software-defined data centers. Rackspace SDDC Anywhere can be installed in a Rackspace facility, a customer data center, or third-party colocation, then extended with data protection, managed disaster recovery, policy controls, VM administration, and log analysis. Broadcom ended the old VMware Cloud Service Provider program on October 31, 2025, but Rackspace remained an invited VMware partner. These environments suit regulated or performance-sensitive applications where isolation, data residency, compliance control, and predictable capacity matter more than a completely shared public cloud.

Public-cloud operations cover Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud. Work can begin with assessment, migration, landing zones, application modernization, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD, then continue with monitoring, patching, security, cost control, and everyday platform management. Rackspace Modern Operations supplies an always-on operating model; Rackspace Elastic Engineering instead gives a customer a flexible monthly reserve of engineering time. RackConnect Global and Rackspace Data Freedom join private infrastructure, colocation, and multiple clouds, reducing platform lock-in and avoiding public-cloud egress fees on eligible paths.

Colocation reaches North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Japan. Rackspace supplies secure space, reserved redundant power, cooling, cross-connects, bandwidth, and 24/7 Smart Hands while the customer retains ownership and administration of the hardware. The primary billing unit is reserved kilowatts, rather than separate space and cooling fees. Blended bandwidth adds redundant circuits, 95th-percentile billing, optional DDoS mitigation, full routing-table access, and IP allocations. Private virtual links through Megaport and Equinix exchanges can be added through RackConnect Global at speeds up to 10 Gbps.

The smaller, more standardized end of the catalog includes Rackspace Email, Rackspace Email Plus, archiving, Hosted Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft 365, and an email reseller program. Standard email provides a 25 GB mailbox, webmail, aliases, Outlook and mobile compatibility, spam and virus filtering, migration assistance, and shared calendars. Email Plus adds ActiveSync, 30 GB of file storage, desktop synchronization, shared contacts, messaging, and Office-compatible browser applications. Archiving supplies encrypted, searchable storage with unlimited retained capacity. Email remains Rackspace's most approachable self-service service next to a largely enterprise and quote-led catalog.

Rackspace also operates across databases, applications, analytics, data platforms, and security. Database administrators handle monitoring, tuning, backups, restoration, and access control in Rackspace, customer-owned, and hyperscale environments. Application teams take on modernization and managed enterprise software, while security work covers cloud posture, network and application defense, zero trust, 24/7 threat response, immutable backup, and recovery-as-code. Rubrik-based cyber recovery restores workloads into isolated landing zones; a dedicated recovery-cloud variant is aimed at regulated organizations with strict recovery-time and recovery-point objectives.

The latest strategy centers on Enterprise AI Cloud: a governed operating stack from CPU and GPU infrastructure through private or hybrid cloud, data foundations, inference, agents, security, and ongoing operations. Forward-deployed engineers stay close to customer teams from discovery through production. AMD, Dell, VMware by Broadcom, Palantir, Uniphore, and Rubrik supply major hardware and software layers, with Rackspace taking operational responsibility. This model is most relevant in healthcare, financial services, and government, where sovereignty, uptime, governance, and auditability cannot be afterthoughts. Seattle Children's managed Epic Healthcare Cloud illustrates the approach with private infrastructure, HIPAA and HITRUST controls, 24/7 certified Epic specialists, fixed-fee delivery four weeks ahead of schedule, and a solution-specific 99.999% uptime commitment.

The scale is real, although Rackspace's current totals are not fully consistent. Its About page counts more than 1,700 certified technical experts, over 11,000 technical certifications, customers in more than 120 countries, and 25 years of managed-service delivery. Current Enterprise AI sections instead refer to more than 2,200 experts, 10,000 certifications, over 600 AI-platform certifications, and 39 data centers across the larger footprint. Contract buyers should verify the actual certified personnel assigned to their account instead of treating company-wide totals as a delivery guarantee.
